When is Treatment Required for Bulimics?
By Sid | May 19, 2009
If you are asking this question, then you are on your first step to a successful bulimia treatment option. One of the greatest hindrances when it comes to this medical condition is the fact that many who suffer from it do not wish to acknowledge it. And by being in a constant state of denial, bulimia nervosa can escalate to worrisome and even fatal levels. You must come to terms with your condition before it reaches the fatal stage; in fact, when you seek bulimia treatment, you are allowing yourself the quickest possible recovery.
First, you must learn whether or not you fit the medical definition of a bulimic. What are the signs that indicate that you do indeed have bulimia? The principal indication of this disease is an unwholesome fixation on your weight. You find yourself overly critical of your body shape and weight, and you tend to ignore people around you and even your health care provider when they say you are already at your ideal weight or underweight for your height. You are also obsessively counting each and every calorie from the food around you, even jotting down your calorie intake on a notepad which you carry everywhere.
You also tend to binge and binge on a very large volume of food in one sitting. If you go for days without eating, you usually end up binging. During this time, you feel as if you have no more control over the amount or type of food you consume. Then you binge and feel ashamed of yourself, so you want to rid yourself of the food you just ate. Some bulimics are classified into the purging type. These bulimics follow a pattern of abusing laxatives, taking enemas or diuretics, and inducing vomiting… solely for the purpose of ridding themselves of the food they ate before it’s actually digested. You can still be bulimic even if you don’t purge. Do you find that you often abstain from food or workout excessively after you eat a lot? Do you frequently exaggerate the amount of calories you need to use up?
If you find yourself in this cycle every few days, weeks or months, then you are indeed suffering from this medical condition. You probably often feel depressed about your weight or how much you eat. Have you ever forbade yourself from attending an important occasion simply because you know there will be food at that event?
Bulimics often endure the pain and humiliation of many other medical difficulties as well. You need to seek medical intervention as soon as you recognize the onset of: chronic gastric reflux or constantly burping with a foul aftertaste; dehydration and electrolyte imbalance (caused by repetitive vomiting); painful inflammation of the throat; peptic ulcers; regular cycles of constipation and diarrhea; and all manner of mouth sores… to name a few. In other words, once you know that you suffer from this horrible illness, it is imperative that you find bulimia treatment as soon as possible.
